Preparation feels like control.

Acceptance feels like gravity.

And the worst part is—

They can look exactly the same from the outside.

Spring arrived the way Alderwatch always did—

unapologetically.

The trees along the square budded overnight, pale green against rain-darkened brick. Damp earth replaced snow in the air—hopeful and unsettling all at once, like something old being disturbed for the sake of something new.

Daylight lingered now, stretching into the evening as if the sun had finally decided it was done waiting for permission.

The town looked better.

That was the problem.

From the café window, Alderwatch appeared almost normal. The square bustled again. People crossed it freely, stepping over the exposed pattern without quite meeting its shape with their eyes.

Rain pooled briefly, then drained away, leaving the brickwork dark and clean.

The system had adapted beautifully.

I hated it for that.

The hum beneath the café floor was steady and restrained, a background presence rather than a demand.

It no longer pulsed in response to my proximity.

It didn’t need to.

It knew where I was.

Preparation did not look like planning meetings or diagrams.

It looked like small decisions made quietly and repeated daily.

Birdie stopped asking how I was doing.

Instead, she started feeding me.

Not comfort food.

Not pastries dusted with sugar or citrus-bright scones, but soups that stuck to the ribs, bread meant to be torn by hand, things designed to ground you in your body when your mind kept trying to drift.

“Eat,” she said one afternoon, sliding a bowl toward me.

“I’m not hungry.”

She didn’t argue.

She just waited.

I ate.

Felix noticed the change too, though he pretended not to at first. He spent hours at the back table with his notebook closed, staring out the window like he was trying to memorize the square before it shifted again.

“You’re not writing,” I observed.

He nodded. “I’m listening.”

“That’s new.”

“It’s overdue.”

The system hummed faintly.

Almost amused.

We stopped talking about if.

That happened sometime midweek, without ceremony.

The question had exhausted itself.

Every conversation now circled how—

how to limit damage,
how to define boundaries,
how to keep preparation from becoming surrender.

Felix was meticulous about it.

“If there’s an anchor,” he said one evening, voice careful, “it doesn’t have to be absolute.”

Birdie crossed her arms. “That sounds like a sales pitch.”

“I’m not selling it,” Felix said quickly. “I’m trying to prevent it from eating her alive.”

The hum tightened slightly at the word anchor.

I held up a hand.

“Talk like I’m not in the room if it helps.”

Felix winced. “It doesn’t.”

“Good,” I said. “Then say it plainly.”

He took a breath.

“The system needs continuity. Stability. But it doesn’t necessarily need exclusivity.”

Birdie frowned. “Meaning?”

“Meaning,” Felix said, “if an anchor exists, it can be constrained. Timed. Buffered.”

The system hummed.

not louder.

focused.

I felt it then, the faint alignment, like gears shifting just enough to acknowledge the idea.

“That’s new,” I said quietly.

Felix’s eyes widened. “You felt that.”

“Yes.”

“That means it’s… negotiable,” he whispered.

The hum did not deny it.

I need everybody to sit down, refill your coffee, and maybe emotionally prepare yourselves because the sentence I am about to say sounds less like current events and more like somebody locked the Book of Exodus, a Florida tourism commercial, and an HBO writers’ room inside an escape room and just let nature take its course.

I know. I KNOW.

Take a minute. Blink if you need to. Stare out a window. Text your therapist. Because every now and then reality drops a sentence into our laps so aggressively ridiculous that satire just quietly gathers its belongings, whispers “girl, I can’t compete with this,” and moves to Vermont to run a lavender farm.

A giant. Gold. Statue.

At his own golf course.

And before anybody says, “Surely this is exaggerated for comedic effect,” let me assure you with the confidence of a woman clutching her emotional support latte: if anything, reality undersold the weirdness.

Picture it. Florida sunshine. Golf carts humming in the distance. A towering gold figure of Grandpa Cheesebrain standing there with his fist in the air like the patron saint of grievance, grievance accessories, and yelling at televisions while religious leaders gather around to bless the monument and repeatedly explain to the public that everyone should calm down because this is definitely, absolutely, pinky swear, not a golden calf situation.

And honestly? That sentence alone deserves an Emmy for unintentional comedy. Because if your event requires multiple public clarifications of “this is not idol worship,” congratulations, your optics have wandered into Bible Villain Origin Story territory.

I am not Bible Scholar Barbie. I know exactly six Bible stories, and half of those are mostly remembered through snacks and emotionally charged Sunday school crafts. But even my extremely average church kid memories seem to recall a fairly famous cautionary tale involving people getting a little too emotionally attached to a shiny gold object and God responding with the spiritual equivalent of, “Oh, for the love of everything holy, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?”

Like… famously. Spectacularly. Whole-plague-adjacent levels of “maybe don’t.”

Honestly, Moses would come down the mountain, take one look at this situation, quietly set the tablets back down, and ask if maybe God wanted to workshop humanity a little longer.

Because pastors reportedly spent part of this whole thing emphasizing that they worship Jesus and not the giant gold monument standing directly in front of them, which has the enormous energy of somebody loudly announcing, “I am not drunk,” while falling directly into a decorative shrub.

Sweetheart. Respectfully.

If you have to spend twenty minutes explaining why something is not idol worship, the sentence has already lost custody of the optics. At this point, the Ten Commandments are somewhere filing a restraining order.

Nothing says “healthy democracy” quite like a giant gold statue and a crowd insisting everybody is being super weird for noticing the giant gold statue.

History has a flawless batting average here. Nobody opens a history book and goes, “Ah, yes, the humble, emotionally grounded leader with the massive gold monument to himself. Surely this fellow practiced moderation and healthy boundaries.”

No.

It always turns into a documentary narrated in a deeply ominous British accent.

And speaking of television accidentally becoming prophecy, can we discuss The Boys for one hot second? Because I genuinely think the writers are sitting somewhere stress-eating Cheez-It’s in stunned silence, whispering, “Okay, but seriously… we were trying to be SATIRE.” At this point, reality keeps stealing their scripts and somehow making them less subtle. You write one authoritarian celebrity character as a cautionary tale, and suddenly America’s over here like, “Cool, cool cool, but what if we added golf carts and a prayer circle?”

Honestly, if somebody pitched this exact plotline to HBO five years ago, an executive would’ve gone: “Too unrealistic. No one will believe the pastors. The gold statue is a bit much.”

And yet here we are, drinking coffee inside what increasingly feels like the deleted scenes of democracy.

Meanwhile, Transportation Secretary Sean “Family Road Trip but Make It Federal” Duffy apparently spent months filming a reality show with his family while also technically running the Department of Transportation, which feels a little bit like discovering your pilot has been filming a lifestyle vlog called Wings, Things & Family Feelings while occasionally remembering planes exist.

Now, yes, before anybody sends me an email written entirely in caps lock, I know the explanation. It wasn’t one giant seven-month RV pilgrimage through America. It happened in chunks. Little wholesome family slices of patriotism. Tiny road-trip nuggets. Duffy says filming happened in short windows and complied with ethics rules.

Sure. Fine.

But the Transportation Secretary still rolled into government with the energy of a substitute teacher who wheels in the TV cart and says, “Actually, we’re not really doing transportation today. Family field trip.” And somehow this whole adventure involved giant transportation and travel companies that just coincidentally happen to have business interests with the department he runs.

Totally casual. Nothing to see here. Just regulators and regulated industries hanging out like besties at a sponsored barbecue. Completely normal. Very “small town bake sale” energy.

Then this man cheerfully announced that road trips “fit any budget.”

Sir. Buddy. Captain Minivan of Delusion.

People are currently standing in grocery stores holding cartons of eggs like they just found Fabergé jewelry. Families are in Aldi doing the kind of emotional mathematics usually reserved for hostage negotiations. Gas prices look like they personally have a grudge. People are standing in front of refrigerators whispering, “Can dinner legally just be popcorn?” like contestants on a very depressing game show.

Road trips fit any budget in the same way yachts are technically a housing option.

Meanwhile, the Transportation Secretary is basically standing on a metaphorical mountaintop yelling, “Have you tried optimism and gasoline?”

I physically cannot.

But then, like a tiny emotional support candle flickering bravely in the chaos, California quietly did something refreshingly radical. Helpful. Useful. Functional.

The state announced free diapers for newborn families because babies, as it turns out, are tiny, adorable freeloaders with absolutely no respect for personal finances and a frankly alarming commitment to bodily fluids.

And honestly? Good.

In a week where America somehow found itself debating giant gold statues and federally adjacent family reality vacations, I will happily take one small story where somebody looked at exhausted new parents and said, “Hey. We got this one.”

Frankly, government occasionally acting like a helpful aunt with Costco access feels revolutionary these days.

Anyway, no letter tomorrow because I will be celebrating Mother’s Day with family, consuming irresponsible amounts of caffeine, crying over something unexpectedly sentimental for approximately six emotionally inconvenient minutes, and avoiding any conversation involving statues, idols, or anyone saying the phrase “totally normal behavior” with a straight face.

To all the moms, bonus moms, stepmoms, grandmas, aunties, chosen moms, exhausted moms, grieving moms, hopeful moms, dog moms, cat moms, and anyone who has ever mothered another human through chaos, Happy Mother’s Day. You deserve rest, hot coffee that stays hot, snacks nobody steals, and at least one uninterrupted stretch of peace where nobody asks where the scissors are when they are exactly where they always are.

And maybe, if the universe loves us even a little, slightly less biblical weirdness next week.

I sat down with coffee this morning expecting the normal level of American nonsense, maybe a light constitutional unraveling before breakfast, and instead I opened the news to discover the federal government is now operating like a guy who bought a fog machine, three swords from a flea market, and a Bluetooth speaker after his mom kicked him out of the basement.

Friend, the country is currently being run by the kind of men who think putting LED lights under a pickup truck counts as infrastructure.

First, Grandpa Cheesebrain decided the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool needed to become “American flag blue,” which is apparently the exact sentence you arrive at after snorting powdered patriotism off the hood of a Sea-Doo. Then the Pentagon dumped UFO files onto the internet like your uncle Rick after two Bud Lights, yelling, “THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE,” while accidentally sitting on the potato salad at the family reunion. Then, floating quietly underneath all of this like a dead carp in a Bass Pro Shop aquarium, came the news that the patriot phones people paid deposits for may never actually exist. At this point, America feels less like a democracy and more like a Spirit Halloween built inside an abandoned Quiznos.

I need you to picture the Reflecting Pool situation because my brain physically cannot carry this burden alone. The Reflecting Pool. Historic. Elegant. Quiet. Designed to mirror the sky and monuments in this solemn, breathtaking way that makes tourists instinctively lower their voices even while their children are actively licking railings nearby. Architects intentionally chose the dark neutral basin because it creates better reflections. Reflection was literally the entire assignment. It’s called the Reflecting Pool. The clue was sitting there in broad daylight, wearing a name tag.

And Grandpa Cheesebrain looked at this historic national landmark and apparently thought, “Needs more Holiday Inn waterpark.”

So now we’re coating it “American flag blue,” which sounds less like preservation and more like a flavor of Mountain Dew exclusively sold at gun shows. We are taking one of the most recognizable monuments in the country and giving it the aesthetic of a dentist’s office koi pond in suburban Tampa. Somewhere, a retired Cracker Barrel manager is standing in front of a Sherwin-Williams paint display whispering, “Finally. Someone brave enough to ruin everything.”

And the reasoning somehow makes it funnier. Apparently, one German tourist commented that the pool looked dirty. ONE GUY. One random man named Dieter probably muttered something while adjusting a fanny pack, and suddenly, we’re speed-running Monument Makeover Extreme Edition. Imagine if France rebuilt the Eiffel Tower because Brenda from Nebraska thought it “needed a fun pop of color.” Also, this allegedly required an “emergency” contract process. Emergency. You know. Like hurricanes. Earthquakes. Alien invasions. The immediate life-threatening national catastrophe of “the water isn’t patriotic enough before July Fourth.”

Honestly, this administration treats the word “emergency” the way suburban moms treat the word “literally.” Everything is an emergency. The pool. Windmills. Paper straws. Electric stoves. Somewhere there’s probably a guy in a red polo shirt screaming at a microwave because it didn’t salute.

And naturally, the contract somehow drifted toward people connected to his own pool orbit because OF COURSE IT DID. America right now is basically three raccoons in a trench coat handing government contracts to their cousins behind a vape shop. Also, and I cannot stress this enough, they literally drove the motorcade through the empty pool basin instead of walking. Through it. Giant black SUVs rolling across a national monument while aides clap nearby like exhausted cruise ship employees forced to participate in a line dance. Somewhere, Abraham Lincoln’s ghost is sitting silently in the memorial like a disappointed substitute teacher watching a classroom glue macaroni to the Constitution.

This is the same governing philosophy we’ve been watching for years now. Nothing gets repaired. It just gets painted louder. America is currently being held together with decorative sealant, Fox News graphics, and the energy of a man yelling at a hostess because the Applebee’s wait is forty minutes. That’s it. That’s the infrastructure plan.

And while Grandpa Poolside Freedom was busy turning the National Mall into a failed casino resort, the Pentagon decided NOW was the perfect time to release UFO files. Oh, thank God. Finally. The issue Americans were truly demanding. Not healthcare. Not housing. Not why eggs now cost roughly the same as a lightly used Honda Civic. Not the Epstein files people keep demanding answers about because the public is tired of watching powerful people treat accountability like it’s optional.

No. We got alien PDFs.

And listen, I LOVE alien nonsense. I grew up on X-Files. I watched Unsolved Mysteries in the dark while eating toaster waffles like a tiny anxiety goblin. But the timing of this rollout was so obvious it may as well have arrived wearing Groucho Marx glasses and carrying a sign that said DISTRACTION PARADE THIS WAY.

“Here are glowing orbs.”

Cool. Anyway, about Epstein.

“Here’s a football-shaped object.”

Neat. Anyway, about Epstein.

“Buzz Aldrin saw a light.”

Wonderful. Anyway, about Epstein.

The government really said, “Perhaps if we show them space beans, they will stop asking questions.” Meanwhile, the entire country stared back with the exhausted expression of a Denny’s waitress working a double shift while a toddler throws pancakes at the ceiling fan.

And honestly? That right there may be the defining energy of this entire era: every time the public asks a difficult question, somebody in Washington jingles shiny keys like we’re all toddlers trapped in a giant national highchair.

That’s the line. That’s the whole administration. Jangling keys in front of the country while the kitchen fills with smoke.

Because nobody woke up demanding another batch of blurry little sky blobs. People keep asking the SAME question over and over, and somehow that conversation always gets buried beneath another pile of patriotic glitter cannons and cable-news nonsense. At this point, the distraction tactics have all the subtlety of a monster truck crashing through a Cheesecake Factory during brunch service.

And then. THEN. The phones.

Friend. THE PHONES.

Remember the gold patriot freedom phones that were supposed to save American manufacturing? The magical “Made in America” devices allegedly arriving any minute now for roughly the last fourteen centuries? Apparently, people are finally opening their inboxes to discover they basically purchased nationalism-flavored vaporware.

Hundreds of thousands of people tossed deposit money into what turned out to be the electronic equivalent of a gas station scratch-off ticket. No phones. No launch. Just vibes. Grandpa Cheesebrain somehow turned mobile technology into a county fair ring toss scam run by a guy named Dale with wraparound sunglasses and an ankle monitor.

It’s the Fyre Festival of cell phones. The Four Seasons Total Landscaping of electronics. QVC for people who think the moon landing was filmed inside a Bass Pro Shop pyramid.

And my FAVORITE part is how the giant “Made in the USA” chest-thumping slowly evaporated like a Walmart rotisserie chicken under a heat lamp. Suddenly, nobody wanted to discuss manufacturing anymore. Suddenly, the phone became harder to find than Melania at a campaign pancake breakfast.

Honestly, the entire administration now feels like a casino buffet at 2:13 a.m. Weird lighting. Sticky carpets. A shrimp fountain that legally should not still be operating. Some sweaty guy named Rick screaming about patriotism beside the soft serve machine while a woman in rhinestones chain-smokes next to a broken animatronic eagle playing Lee Greenwood through a blown speaker. Every single week, it’s another distraction. Paint the pool. Release the aliens. Sell the imaginary phones. Wave the shiny object. Jangle the keys. Cue the bald eagle noises.

And somehow that’s become the governing strategy of the modern Republican party: if reality starts catching up to them, just throw another flaming rotisserie chicken into the middle of the room and hope everybody stops noticing the ceiling collapsing.

Meanwhile, the rest of us are standing in our kitchens clutching coffee like it contains classified survival information, staring into the middle distance while the republic gets renovated by men who think spray sealant and merchandising are personality traits.

And somehow, the most comforting part of all this is that people are finally starting to notice the performance. The gold paint is dripping. The gimmicks are getting sloppier. The distractions now arrive with the energy of a mall magician aggressively insisting you pick a card while smoke pours out of the building behind him. Eventually, even the most checked-out guy at Buffalo Wild Wings starts blinking at the television like, “…wait a damn minute.”

Anyway. I need coffee so strong it briefly allows me to hear colors. Possibly served by a woman named Debra who has smoked Virginia Slims since 1987 and can sense corruption like a shark smells blood in the water.

I woke up this morning, opened my phone, took one sip of coffee, and immediately made the kind of sound Victorian women used to make right before fainting onto a chaise lounge because someone revealed an ankle at brunch. Just a full-body “OH FOR THE LOVE OF GOD” before the caffeine had even reached my bloodstream. Because every day in America now feels like waking up inside a deleted scene from Veep directed by the ghost of a Confederate Cracker Barrel manager.

And today’s fresh constitutional fever dream comes to us from Tennessee, where Republican lawmakers apparently saw the existence of Black political representation and reacted like suburban dads spotting a drag queen near a Hobby Lobby. Full panic. Full pearl clutching. Full “somebody get me a special session and a Sharpie immediately.”

Friend, they took the state’s only majority Black congressional district and sliced that thing apart like a drunk aunt attacking a Costco sheet cake at a baptism. Memphis got redistributed like leftovers nobody wanted to claim after a church picnic. Nashville got stretched around the map like mozzarella on a YouTube cheese-pull video. And somewhere in a conference room that definitely smells like burnt coffee and untreated entitlement, a consultant in boat shoes probably whispered, “Gentlemen… what if democracy but whiter?”

Because, apparently, winning most of the congressional seats was not enough. No no. These people looked at a 7-2 advantage and said, “But what if we also emotionally waterboard the concept of fair representation until it stops moving?” Honestly, at this point, Republicans treat elections the way toddlers treat Candy Land when they start losing. Suddenly, the rules change. The board disappears. Somebody’s crying. Grandpa’s cheating. And an aggressively red-faced man named Brent is yelling about “integrity” while hiding cards under his thigh.

And the timing of this thing. Oh, my sweet caramel macchiato Christ. The SECOND the Supreme Court weakened voting protections, Tennessee lawmakers moved faster than suburban moms hearing there’s a 40% off sale on decorative pumpkins at Target. Suddenly, everybody’s in emergency session mode. Sirens. Speeches. Urgency. Sweaty little legislative weasels scurrying around the Capitol carrying district maps like Gollum protecting the One Ring. Not because wages are collapsing. Not because housing costs look like random phone numbers now. Not because healthcare in this country is basically “drink water and declare bankruptcy.” Not because people are rationing asthma medication like it’s moon rocks during the apocalypse. Nope. The emergency was apparently “too many Black voters are still able to elect someone.” Just absolutely rancid priorities.

And while crowds packed the Capitol, furious about all this, some Republican lawmakers reportedly sat there smiling through the protests like cruise directors on the Titanic explaining there would still be a dessert buffet at 8. That’s the part that keeps sticking in my head. The laughing. Because there is something deeply unsettling about people treating democracy like a frat prank. Like this is all just one big game of rich-guy Risk being played by men whose personalities are mostly golf shirts and untreated childhood insecurity.

Republicans looked at democracy and said, “This would work much better if fewer people participated.”

And the excuses they’re giving? Oh my God. Incredible. Stunning. Olympic-level nonsense. My favorite is this whole “well, we removed racial data from the process” argument. Oh WELL THEN NEVER MIND. I guess racism is cured now, everyone. Fantastic news. Somebody alert the Smithsonian. Apparently, if you close your eyes before driving the bulldozer into a neighborhood, technically, you did not SEE the neighborhood. That’s their logic. That’s the argument. That’s where we are as a nation. A country being held together by cold brew, expired coping mechanisms, and whatever microscopic thread of patience survived the last ten news cycles.

Meanwhile, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson are standing there refusing to shrink themselves for the comfort of people actively trying to erase their communities from political relevance. Refusing to do the little “thank you, sir, may I please keep one district” performance certain politicians seem to expect while they casually redraw maps like drunk dads reorganizing fantasy football teams. And Justin Pearson basically standing there saying, “You can try to break us all you want. We are still going to be here,” hit harder than a diner waitress slamming down coffee at 2 a.m. after your third divorce conversation.

Because that is the thing these power-hungry little map ferrets never understand. Communities are not puzzle pieces. People are not spreadsheet cells. History is not an Etch A Sketch you can shake until all the inconvenient voters disappear. You cannot just carve up Black communities like a HoneyBaked ham and expect everybody to politely clap because you used the word “modernization.”

Authoritarianism always arrives wrapped in words like “efficiency,” “order,” and “tradition,” like a fascist gift basket from Hobby Lobby.

And Justin Jones burning the Confederate flag during the special session? Friend, conservatives reacted like he’d personally set fire to the Cheesecake Factory instead of symbolically protesting lawmakers actively diluting Black voting power in real time. The same people who spent years screaming “heritage not hate” suddenly developed a delicate constitutional sensitivity disorder the SECOND somebody challenged the symbolism. Amazing. Remarkable. A level of selective outrage usually only seen in men who cheat on their wives and then write Facebook essays about family values.

The hypocrisy in this country has become so dense you could pave highways with it.

And Stacey Abrams saying not to ignore the South because the worst anti-democratic ideas get tested there before spreading nationally? That woman stays out here speaking in prophecy while half the media is still covering authoritarianism like it’s an interesting little disagreement over potato salad recipes. Because this is the pattern. They test it in one state. They normalize it on cable news. They flood social media with nonsense. They wait for everybody to get exhausted. Then suddenly, the impossible becomes “controversial but legal.” It’s the political version of putting a frog in boiling water, except the frog has student loans and three streaming subscriptions it forgot to cancel.

And thank God the NAACP immediately challenged this mess because somebody in America still remembers voters are supposed to choose politicians instead of politicians building themselves little escape-room districts shaped like frightened salamanders.

Also, can we discuss the absolute chaos of changing district lines right before election season? Candidates are now wandering around Tennessee like confused tourists holding maps upside down. “Wait, am I still running here?” “No, Brenda, you live in District Beige now.” “What’s District Beige?” “We made it up yesterday during lunch.”

And underneath all the legal jargon and consultant buzzwords sits the actual truth nobody wants to say out loud: these people are terrified. Terrified of demographic change. Terrified of young voters. Terrified of diverse coalitions. Terrified that if everybody actually votes fairly, the whole dusty little house of grievance cards starts wobbling like a folding table at a NASCAR tailgate. That fear is driving all of this. Not strength. Not confidence. Fear wrapped in patriot cosplay and stuffed into an American flag windbreaker.

And now RFK Jr. has apparently decided the greatest threat facing modern civilization is not housing costs, not collapsing healthcare access, not the fact that everybody now dissociates in the toothpaste aisle at Target, but antidepressants.

Yes. Somewhere inside RFK “Toilet Seat Tony” Jr.’s frontal lobe, Dr. Wiggles the Brainworm is apparently pacing back and forth in tiny orthopedic sandals, clutching a wellness podcast microphone and whispering, “What if Americans simply raw-dogged the apocalypse?”

Phenomenal. Incredible. Somebody get this worm a Substack and a mushroom tincture sponsorship immediately.

And listen. I support therapy. I support exercise. I support nutrition. I support sunlight. I support community. I support emotional healing. I support every exhausted woman named Jen crying in Pilates and then recovering with a lavender oat milk latte and a good therapist named Diane who wears interesting scarves.

But what these people are proposing has the energy of a man arriving at a four-alarm apartment fire holding cucumber water and saying, “Have we explored journaling?”

Sir. People are not anxious because they forgot to do yoga.

People are anxious because America currently feels like riding a shopping cart downhill through a fireworks factory while billionaires livestream motivational quotes at us from private jets.

These medications help people function while living through nonstop economic panic, healthcare chaos, climate dread, algorithmic outrage, and the daily experience of opening your phone to discover another sweaty cabinet official explaining away another deeply weird friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Because while Dr. Wiggles was upstairs redecorating the nation’s serotonin receptors with reclaimed barn wood and podcast jargon, Howard “Human Moisture Event” Lutnick spent the day in a closed congressional interview trying to explain why his relationship timeline with Jeffrey Epstein keeps changing more often than a teenager’s Spotify aesthetic.

Apparently, the man who publicly claimed years ago that he severed ties after one unsettling encounter is now having to explain continued contact years later, including social invitations, business overlap, and the tiny, inconvenient detail of visiting Epstein’s private island for lunch in 2012.

Which is already a rough sentence structurally.

Nothing good has ever followed the phrase “private island lunch with Jeffrey Epstein.” That phrase alone sounds like the opening scene of a documentary narrated entirely by ominous cello music.

This man stood there rambling through wars, oil routes, China, Cuba, Vatican meetings, naval operations, sanctions, gas prices, and Middle East tensions with the exact energy of a guy cornering you at Costco while holding seventeen folders and a sweating rotisserie chicken. At one point, he sounded less like the Secretary of State and more like Siri after being dropped in a swimming pool.

Meanwhile, the reporters just sat there nodding politely like this was normal. Like America hasn’t become one giant escape room designed by divorced dads who own tactical flashlights.

And then Rubio started implying Congress having oversight on war powers was somehow unconstitutional, which is honestly one of the boldest acts of confidence I’ve seen from a man who permanently looks like he’s about to ask if the hotel continental breakfast includes hard-boiled eggs.

These people treat the Constitution the way a toddler treats the instructions for a LEGO set. They throw it across the room immediately, eat one corner, and then insist the helicopter should absolutely have six dragon heads and a flamethrower.

Meanwhile, Pete Hegseth was over at the Pentagon aggressively existing in high definition like somebody wished for “a podcast comment section come to life.” Every time I see that man, I feel like Monster Energy should legally be required to sponsor the chyron.

But then.

THEN.

The White House somehow pivoted from war briefings directly into National Youth Sports and Fitness Month like a drunk uncle changing karaoke songs mid-verse.

Nothing says “healthy childhood memories” quite like gathering elementary school kids in the Oval Office while Grandpa Cheesebrain starts wandering through Cold War bedtime stories between putting demonstrations and anti-trans rants. The entire thing looked like somebody gave your weirdest Facebook relative access to a school assembly and a live microphone after three sugar-free Red Bulls and a cholesterol medication adjustment.

This man brought back the Presidential Fitness Test while visibly struggling to remain awake in his own chair.

I am begging America to appreciate the symbolism here.

That is Tennessee Williams levels of accidental symbolism.

And there stood RFK Jr., looking like a scarecrow that became sentient after listening to too many wellness podcasts, talking about obesity and fifty-mile hikes while sounding like he was moments away from recommending fermented tree bark and moonlight as antibiotics. Then he started complimenting everyone in the cabinet like they were prize-winning horses at a county fair and rattling off who could supposedly survive a fifty-mile hike while Grandpa Cheesebrain interrupted him with the desperate urgency of a man demanding to know why nobody mentioned his fantasy football stats.

“What about me? You didn’t mention my name. I could do a 50-mile hike!”

You are the president of the United States.

Not a guy yelling from the back row of a CrossFit orientation.

And the children. Oh my God. Those poor children looked like they accidentally wandered into the world’s weirdest substitute teacher meltdown. One minute, they thought they were attending a fitness event, and the next minute, Grandpa Cheesebrain was explaining nuclear weapons, Iran, fake news, powerlifting, bombing campaigns, and his Nobel Prize fantasies, like Satan himself had been hired as the event DJ by an underfunded school district.

This was supposed to be about exercise.

Instead, the kids got a live-action combination of campaign rally, golf infomercial, grievance therapy session, and Facebook comment section with occasional stretches of putting.

At one point, he reportedly challenged a teenager to a fight after asking if the kid thought he could take him.

A fight.

At a youth fitness event.

Meanwhile, he was also lecturing children about trans athletes, rambling about how Iran was supposedly “two weeks away” from catastrophe, attacking Obama to a room full of confused kids, and bragging that nobody deserves a Nobel Prize more than he does while standing next to middle schoolers who probably just wanted Capri Suns and a field trip packet signed.

The Oval Office has fully become that family barbecue where one relative corners children near the potato salad and starts explaining how the moon landing was fake while everyone else quietly pretends to check the grill.

And then came the putting portion.

This man owns enough golf courses to be legally classified as a Scottish weather pattern and still missed the same tiny putt repeatedly during a Presidential Fitness event while children stood nearby pretending not to notice, like hostages trying not to upset the magician at a birthday party at Applebee’s.

It was the physical embodiment of American decline.

A man in expensive shoes repeatedly failing at a task specifically designed for him while everyone around him claps politely out of fear and social obligation.

Honestly, the whole event had the energy of Thanksgiving dinner after somebody lets Grandpa discover YouTube conspiracy videos and boxed wine simultaneously.

America is currently being governed by the emotional energy of a Facebook comment section that learned how to hold press conferences.

Then came the ballroom disaster.

Oh, sweet cinnamon oat milk, Christ.

This ballroom situation has inflated faster than a gender reveal balloon factory near an open flame. First, it was supposedly a patriotic donor project. Then the price started climbing like a Labradoodle on espresso. Then, suddenly, taxpayers got invited into the conversation like the world’s worst Venmo request.

Now Congress is hovering around this thing, trying to explain why Americans apparently need to finance what looks like Liberace’s NATO panic room.

And the justification is incredible.

Apparently, this giant glitter mausoleum now requires “security enhancements,” which in Washington translates loosely to: “Surprise! The billionaires would like the peasants to cover valet parking for Versailles.”

Meanwhile, normal Americans are standing in grocery aisles calculating whether cheese has become a luxury item, while these people attempt to build a gold-plated ego cathedral with bunker vibes.

Chuck Grassley, trying to sneak funding through Congress, feels exactly like watching somebody attempt to smuggle a jacuzzi through TSA wrapped in a trench coat and optimism.

The ballroom started as “privately funded” and somehow evolved into “surprise, Grandma, you bought the billionaire a chandelier fortress.”

By the end of today, I felt like I needed three margaritas, two emotional support lattes, a weighted blanket, and one medically supervised scream into the void just to recover from the psychic whiplash of hearing “National Fitness Month” immediately followed by “nuclear annihilation for children.”

The federal government currently feels like somebody duct-taped a cable news green room to the clearance aisle of a casino buffet and then handed the loudest man there a foghorn and diplomatic immunity.

And yet somehow people are still paying attention. Still resisting. Still refusing to normalize this traveling circus of ego, grievance, spray tan fumes, and expired testosterone energy drink powder masquerading as governance.

And the caption goes full dramatic prophecy mode about strength and destiny, and this is the way, which is incredible because it is, in fact, not the way. It is aggressively not the way. It is the opposite of the way. It is the way, if the way got lost, panicked, and started making bad decisions in a Kohl’s parking lot. The wildest part is not that they missed the point. It’s that the warning label is the point, and they still wore it like merch.

Fans immediately clocked it because nothing activates a fandom faster than lore violations. You can dismantle institutions all day long, and people will debate politely, but take off the helmet, and suddenly it is DEFCON 1 for people who own replica armor and have spreadsheets. And this is not even a one-off. This is at least the third time this year he has rolled that line out like it is part of the set list, which somehow makes it feel less spontaneous and more like a deeply confusing brand choice. Wackadoodle doo does not even begin to cover it.

There was also a brief what is a corner store situation followed immediately by a full confidence recovery, like watching someone trip, salute, and insist it was choreography. And somewhere in this whirlwind of economic vibes and verbal side quests, we took a passionate detour into redecorating the reflecting pool, because nothing says steady leadership like pitching a home improvement project mid-sentence like you just wandered into a HGTV audition.

Also, we are now being told to feel good about prices because they are not even worse, which is like being congratulated for only mildly setting your kitchen on fire. Great job, everyone. The flames are manageable; let’s celebrate.

And the rhetoric is not exactly calming anyone down. Including threats that countries could be, and I cannot believe this is a real sentence, “blown off the face of the earth” if things escalate, which feels like maybe not the tone you want when everyone is already one bad decision away from a very large problem. We are watching people cosplay strength while accidentally live-streaming instability.

Because this is how it always works. Not with a dramatic villain speech and a lightning storm. With process. With procedure. With people getting tired and overwhelmed and just wanting things to feel normal again. With power expanding in small, justifiable steps until suddenly it is not small anymore, and you are standing there like, wait, when did we agree to this?

Star Wars has been yelling this at us for decades. Fascism does not kick the door down. It gets invited in because it promises to fix the mess. It smiles. It reassures. It says trust me. During her absence, the administration plans a rotating cast of officials for briefings, including Grandpa Cheesebrain himself, JD Vance, and cabinet members. Incredible. The White House briefing room is now improv night for professional gaslighters, and JD Vance explaining reality to the country feels like asking a scented candle to captain a submarine.

And tonight, the White House Correspondents’ Dinner returns.

Hundreds of journalists reportedly signed letters criticizing attacks on the press and urging stronger defense of First Amendment principles. Some are boycotting. Some are attending with symbolic protests. Good, because dressing up to celebrate journalism while accommodating people who smear journalists is like hosting a Lifeguard of the Year banquet for a shark.

Between the hours normally reserved for REM sleep, bad tattoos, and raccoons committing light property crime, our commander in caps lock turned his feed into a flea market of grievances. He was demanding resignations, resurrecting old election fantasies, accusing enemies of treason, and generally behaving like a Roomba that got stuck under the couch and developed fascist opinions. Officials overseas responded with the diplomatic version of, “Please collect your grandfather.”

Meanwhile, White House staffers rolled out their longest-running stage production, He Meant Something Else. We are told all-night posting proves stamina. We are told that barely sleeping proves genius. By that standard, every parent of a newborn and every sophomore cramming for finals should be eligible to run NATO. Put a cold brew in one hand and launch codes in the other, apparently that is the hiring rubric now.

Then sunlight hit the earth, and cameras caught him nodding off again in public. Eyes closing, chin dipping, consciousness leaving the building like it had somewhere better to be. Staff behind him stood frozen in that special posture used by people pretending Uncle Ron is not screaming at a fern during Thanksgiving. We are asked to believe he is too energized to sleep at night and too energized to remain awake during the day. This man is both Red Bull and NyQuil. Schrödinger’s recliner.

Let me be clear: age is not the punchline. Plenty of older Americans are sharp, disciplined, wise, and capable of running circles around people half their age. The punchline is obvious dysfunction being gift-wrapped in flags and sold as strength. If any regular employee spent all night posting conspiracy chowder and then snored through a morning presentation, HR would appear so fast the carpet would ripple.

He also whined that courts keep interfering with his favorite pastime: doing whatever he wants with everyone else’s money. Nothing injures a self-declared titan like discovering the government contains other branches. The Constitution, to him, is that rude hostess who keeps saying, “I’m sorry, sir, that table is not available.”

Even some allies are beginning to wobble, which is always delicious. When people who once applauded every tantrum start backing away like they smell gas, you know the room has changed. The band is playing near the lifeboats. The interns are quietly updating LinkedIn. Someone is carrying out framed photos one nervous trip at a time.

The danger is not one weird night. It is the repetition. The slow national shrug. We are being trained to treat nocturnal meltdowns, daytime dozing, paranoia monologues, and revenge fantasies as routine weather conditions. Sunny in the southwest. Chance of showers in the Midwest. Presidential spiral likely before dawn. Carry an umbrella and maybe a civics textbook.

Dear sane people, coffee lifers, and anyone still foolishly hoping public office requires at least one working conscience…

I need to begin with a sentence so deranged it should be delivered by a raccoon in a necktie banging a cymbal: members of the House Oversight Committee are reportedly floating the idea that Grandpa Cheesebrain could pardon Ghislaine Maxwell in exchange for testimony.

Yes. That sentence is real. I checked twice, then checked my carbon monoxide detector.

We have apparently entered the phase of American politics where a convicted trafficker is being discussed like a promotional rebate. Not justice. Not accountability. Not listening to survivors who already carried boulders uphill while half the country asked for better lighting. No, the new hotness is transactional redemption. Freedom as a coupon code. Morality available in select markets while supplies last.

Some folks are pitching it as a necessary trade to get answers. A trade. Like swapping an air fryer for patio cushions on Facebook Marketplace. As if the topic here is not a woman convicted for helping facilitate abuse, but a slightly dented Keurig with “works great!” in the listing description. If your ethics collapse this quickly under fluorescent lighting, they were made of graham crackers and hope.

And let’s not put on the community theater production of This Is About Truth. Please. My coffee has boundaries. This would be about designer testimony, hand-tailored testimony, testimony hemmed at the waist and accessorized to flatter the purchaser. Survivors already spoke. They spoke through pain, scrutiny, humiliation, trauma, and the sort of public cruelty that makes wolves seem nurturing. Yet the powerful still keep circling back to the one narrator whose motives arrive wearing price tags. That tells you exactly what kind of story they are shopping for.

Anyone loudly pushing a Maxwell pardon raises immediate questions about judgment, priorities, and whether their moral compass was purchased at a gas station next to novelty beef jerky.

Then, because chaos in this administration is less an accident and more a cherished family heirloom, there was an Oval Office executive order signing that immediately slipped on a banana peel, fell down three flights of stairs, and landed in a fireworks warehouse.

That part deserved an adult conversation.

Instead, it got this administration.

Because rather than stay on veterans, treatment access, or how to help people in crisis, the whole thing turned into a civic haunted house where every room had a different bad decision screaming inside it.

A reporter asked about Iran, and Grandpa Cheesebrain immediately got prickly enough to sand furniture. Then he started bragging about prescription drug prices dropping by five hundred percent and six hundred percent.

Five hundred percent.

Six hundred percent.

Sir, prices cannot drop more than one hundred percent unless CVS is now paying you to take home blood pressure medication and a seasonal candle. That is not math. That is a fever dream with a calculator.

Math itself reportedly packed a suitcase and left through a side window.

Then, in a plot twist nobody ordered, he pulled out a picture of the Washington Monument and began touting his inauguration crowd size, insisting the crowd was enormous and using a framed image like a substitute teacher presenting evidence in a deeply personal grievance case. Because, naturally, the nation’s healthcare signing needed an emergency slideshow about attendance from years ago.

And if that was not enough ego for one afternoon, he then compared the crowd at Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous speech to one of his own crowds, saying he had the same exact crowd, maybe more.

Imagine standing anywhere near American history and deciding the key takeaway is still your attendance numbers. That level of narcissism should be studied by scientists in a secure facility.

As the room continued to age like milk in the sun, he floated the possibility of helping Spirit Airlines by buying it.

Buying it.

Who is buying it? The federal government? The White House? A guy named Chip with a checkbook and no supervision? Are we about to have federal boarding zones? Will delays now be announced by Homeland Security? Is the emergency exit row getting a cabinet secretary?

Asked how long the United States would remain involved in Iran, he shrugged it off with a “don’t rush me” vibe, which is perhaps not the sentence you want attached to war.

Later, when Prince Harry was mentioned in connection with Ukraine, Grandpa Cheesebrain declared he speaks for the United Kingdom more than Prince Harry does, because apparently, delusion is now recognized as a diplomatic credential.

And yes, he appeared to nod off again during an Oval Office event, which may have been the only peaceful moment the building saw all day.

So the scoreboard today reads: pardon chatter for Maxwell, survivors sidelined again, a serious veteran’s mental-health issue buried under nonsense, fantasy mathematics, emergency crowd-size show-and-tell, possible government ownership of bargain airfare, casual war banter, self-appointed British royalty, and a nap.

That is not governing. That is a flea market built on cursed land where every booth sells terrible instincts and expired shrimp.

They count on exhaustion. They count on confusion. They count on people staring into the middle distance and saying, “Well, I guess this is normal now.”

Unfortunately for them, some of us have memory, receipts, and enough caffeine in our bloodstream to hear colors.

Stay loud. Stay sharp. Keep the pot brewing. Democracy is going to need a double shot and a ride home.
